Country Strong :: Rental Movie Review

Country Strong  {Drama – PG-13}

A drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter Beau (Hedlund) meets Kelly (Gwyneth) in a rehabilitation facility where he works.

Starring:
Gwyneth Paltrow as Kelly Canter
Tim McGraw as James Canter
Leighton Meester as Chiles Stanton
Garrett Hedlund as Beau Hutton
Marshall Chapman as Winnie

First off, I love Gwyneth Paltrow, I love her blog (Goop), I love her husband and his band (Coldplay) so I was determined to love this movie. My husband suggested it last night and I was ready to sit back and enjoy. It started out great and I just kept thinking, what a perfect night, I’m going to love this movie…

I’ve seen other reviews that Kelly’s husband was having an affair with the young and rising character in the movie but that’s not how I saw it. I think he was dedicated to the industry and his work. He related to the young character and his wife more in a business way instead of a personal way.  I think that’s why his wife struggled because she was just a business deal instead of a wife to be loved.

Then the reality hit that I didn’t care about Gwyneth’s character. This movie was very much like the movie “The Rose” do you remember that movie with Bette Midler?
… I cared about the main character in The Rose. but, with Kelly Canter I felt a disconnect even though they tried to show her softer side, we just didn’t get that warm and relatable attraction that we needed to give our full attention to her character and therefore the movie.
I was a little intrigued with the two upcoming stars Leighton Meester as Chiles Stanton and Garrett Hedlund as Beau Hutton. If the movie was only about them it would have been a better movie.
Then there was that thing with the baby quail. Really? Can you tell me how a quail lives in a tiny box, is caried everywhere, and doesn’t grow any bigger than a chick in 3 weeks? This is the immature directing of this movie that showed up throughout.
He Said: Don’t rent it
She Said: Rent it with your girlfriends and without your husband
