Hug your child everyday. That’s what it says on the sign board at a church in my town today and it’s so true. They need to know you care, they need to know they can count on you and trust you. How do you build this confidence and your relationship with your kids, and keep it?
Well, it’s like any relationship. You have to nurture it over time. You can’t walk in the room, ask if they did their homework, and then get on your computer or watch TV. You have to spend time talking even if it means having dinner every night and adding dessert, going on a long drive without ipods. Find time to connect and enjoy each other’s company. Be in The Now, as they say. Everyday, no less than 5 times per week.
Say you’re dating someone… Would you find real time to talk with that person? Would you ask questions, tell stories, laugh? Of course, your relationship with your child should be just as focused. Start now, never stop. It’s a life long relationship and it’s worth your time.
